Down the TBR Hole #3: Cassie Edition

I found out about this meme because Kris Marie from Boston Book Reader does it regularly on her blog! It, however, originated with Lost in a Story that deserves all the recognition for starting this great meme for the book blogging community!

The purpose of this meme is to go through your TBR (I am using GoodReads at first and then plan on going through my home books after!) and decide if you are going to keep the book or if you are getting rid of it on your TBR!  For a more formal understanding here is the original wording from the first “Down the TBR Hole” by Lost in a Story:

Anyway, it works like this:

  • Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

Currently, I have 313 books on my GR TBR, so I have decided to go through five of the books on the list at a time. I am hoping to get it lowered to at least only 200 by the time this is over. Wish me luck, I am going to need it! I will also be keeping track of the number of books that I remove from my GR TBR during this process, so that a final statistical number of removed titles is available because well I can and I want to see how many I removed after all is said and done. ?

SYNOPSIS: When two soldiers from opposite sides of a never-ending galactic war fall in love, they risk everything to bring a fragile new life into a dangerous old universe.

From bestselling writer Brian K. Vaughan, Saga is the sweeping tale of one young family fighting to find their place in the worlds. Fantasy and science fiction are wed like never before in this sexy, subversive drama for adults.

REASON: I wanted to read this at one point, but since then I feel like I have realized that the content and what I have heard about it makes me really not want to spend my time in this direction when there are other things that I could read. I feel that I would enjoy something else more than this.

SYNOPSIS: The year is 1944. As Allied forces fight the enemy on Europe’s war-torn beaches, another battle begins in a child’s bedroom in Brooklyn. When the nightmarish Boogeyman snatches a boy and takes him to the realm of the Dark, the child’s playthings, led by the toy soldier known as the Colonel, band together to stage a daring rescue. On their perilous mission they will confront the boy’s bitter and forgotten toys, as well as betrayal in their own ranks. Can they save the boy from the forces of evil, or will they all perish in the process? The Stuff of Legend is a haunting and ultimately redemptive tale of loyalty, camaraderie, and perseverance

REASON: A friend that is not really in my life any more (I changed locations) recommended this book to me. I just don’t feel drawn to it on my own accord. Sorry!

SYNOPSIS: Who are the Rat Queens?

They’re a pack of booze-guzzling, death-dealing battle maidens-for-hire and they’re in the business of killing all the god’s creatures for profit. Meet Hannah the Rockabilly Elven Mage, Violet the Hipster Dwarven Fighter, Dee the Atheist Human Cleric and Betty the Hippy Smidgen Thief.

This modern spin on an old school genre is a violent, monster-killing epic that is like Buffy meets Tank Girl in a Lord of the Rings world on crack!

DECISION: This one stays!
REASON:  I love the way that this sounds still and since I know that I can check it out on HOOPLA (through my local library) I know I will get around to reading it sooner rather than later, thus it sticks around for now.

At Miss Qiunzilla Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s camp for hard-core lady-types, things are not what they seem. Three-eyed foxes. Secret caves. Anagrams. Luckily, Jo, April, Mal, Molly, and Ripley are five rad, butt-kicking best pals determined to have an awesome summer together… And they’re not gonna let a magical quest or an array of supernatural critters get in their way! The mystery keeps getting bigger, and it all begins here.

DECISION: Bye, sorry, this one hurts a bit.
REASON: Tried to read this one earlier this year, but just couldn’t get into it. As a result, I am removing it for now. I still feel though that I should be reading this. I have heard amazing things about it, but sometimes a book just doesn’t resonate with us at a particular moment. I think I may return to this at a much later date, just not today.

SYNOPSIS: Wolverine, Deadpool, Doctor Doom, Thanos: There’s one hero that’s beaten them all-and now she’s got her own ongoing series! (Not that she’s bragging.) That’s right, you asked for it, you got it, it’s SQUIRREL GIRL! (She’s also starting college this semester.) It’s the start of a brand-new set of adventures starring the nuttiest and most upbeat super hero in the world!

DECISION: Staying!
REASON: I just can’t say no to reading Squirrel Girl. I am drawn to her as a lovable goofball character. I will have to see if Hoopla has this as well for next month!

Hello Cass, It has been a while since I visited your blog and I hope everything is good with you.

I love this ‘Down the TBR hole’ post as I get to hear about many books that I won’t have across otherwise, especially since you and I have very different types of interest in books.

Life is well! I am so glad to see you visiting the site. I still often visit yours because I feel that you were one of the first “friends” I made in the community. I enjoy the “Down the TBR Hole” posts for the same reason. i see other people’s interest and what they want to read. I am eclectic with my book tastes, so I tend to have different tastes than most people 😉 hehe
