Patsy Walker has managed to escape her past, her enemies and Hell itself (literally) – but nothing compares to job hunting in New York City! Between trying to make rent and dodging bullets, Patsy barely has time to deal with her mother’s exploitative romance comics about Patsy’s past resurfacing, much less how they start to interfere with her work and dating life. As she goes from living a double life to a triple, what the hell is Patsy Walker supposed to do? There’ll be friendship and burgers, monsters and rent checks and a ghost from the past with questionable motives! Comics’ most flexible heroine has been a provisional Avenger, a Defender, Satan’s daughter-in-law and a dead woman–but she’s never been anything like this!

CollectingPatsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat! 1-6

Patsy Walker, “Hellcat”, was a character in some of “West Coast Avengers” due to her connection to the character Tigra. This made me interested in reading this, so when I saw it on the hoopla! app through my local library, I was all kinds of ready to read it. I can say that I was not disappointed, but I was also surprised by this volume as well.

The “West Coast Avengers” stories that contained this character were serious in nature, but this is anything but that. This is a comedic look at her life as a D-list superhero. The cast of side characters in this are hilarious. One side character is the popular She-Hulk. Most of them, however, are new creations for this particular comic. I found most of them to be interesting and it will be worth seeing where they go during this series.

The artwork is not “superhero” and not mainstream by any means. This is probably due to that comedic element. It is much more akin to some of the “She-Hulk” comics that have been published where she was also done in a more comedic tone. It was distracting at times, but for the most part you could tell who was who. Telling who is who is the most important thing that I worry about in any comic book. If I cannot tell who character A from character B then I lose immersion in the comic’s world. Luckily, that never occurs here, even though the art is not as stylized as other Marvel titles.

The storylines here are hysterical! They also have a certain tone that showcases people are redeemable, which I rather liked. Patsy doesn’t see people as villains or heroes. She knows that sometimes life is not that simple. This shines through in her characterization and her choices throughout these six issues of the series. One of my favorite stories that runs through these issues, it may continue into the other volumes as well, is that an old friend, Heddy, has published old comic books with Patsy and her friends featured in them. Romance comics were what originally featured Patsy Walker. This inclusion is a great nod to this original origin of Patsy. It was also a great way to incorporate a few side characters from her history, but there are also a few newer characters as well. There was a sweet side character that is gay that I simply adored. This person got a bit of a romance in these six issues, but just a slight nod to it. Then near the end they kinda changed one of the characters. I am hoping, however, that it does not change this cute little dynamic between two of the characters, as it is part of the charm and heart of the series

If you are a serious comic book fan, this is not going to be for you. If you know Patsy from those types of tales, again not for you. If you are looking for light-hearted superhero fare with little need to know back history of a character, pick this up! It will be a fun little ride, well worth your time. I know I want to continue on with it.

There are additional volumes in this particular series, but hoopla! does not seem to have them available. I do eventually want to get around to reading the other volumes of this particular series. This will not be anytime soon though due to their lack of immediate availability through this app.
