It’s the holidays yet again, and that means it’s time to join EVERYONE’S FAVORITE GWEN (take that, Stacy!) and celebrate good times, come on! Only problem is…somehow this year’s festive traditions seem to be a little…off…and Gwen’s the only one who notices. FEATURING: Gwenpool (duh), Spider-Man, Red Skull, Punisher and even Deadpool! This is one present you know you gotta buy yourself!

I had never read any Gwenpool comics before this one. I was unfamiliar with the character and just knew that Marvel seemed to slap anything Gwen on anything Pool. That is my opinion of this character. After the popularity of the Spider-Gwen character, it seems that Gwen is the Marvel answer to Harley Quinn. Not sure why, but it seems that way. To each company their own I guess, but it seems a little basic to me.

This being said, I still decided to give this a little bit of a go. Heck, I wanted to do Marvel Holiday Comics and it came up, so why not? The first story seemed like I needed to be better in the know about the character of Gwenpool and her side characters. I was a bit lost. Then Galactus was basically the happiest little elf in the entire world? What? Yeah, then the story continued further into the book. Away from this first little bit. For some reason, it appears that the North Pole is a bad place? Say what? This first story was less fun and more weird. The artwork though was your tradition artwork, so there was at least that going for it and it did incorporate Christmas elements into it, but it just seemed weird to me.

I thought this was supposed to be about Gwenpool? Nope, guess not. The second story is Miles Morales. It has Christmas elements as well, but is another hot mess of a story. The story focuses on him being attacked by a lot of big bads in the Marvel Universe at one time. Galactus again is this cheerful wonderful human being that wants to save Christmas for everyone. He is basically Santa, but I guess just BIGGER! I can say that I rolled my eyes a bit during this entire story. The artwork again was traditional and was not distracting for the most part. It was not my favorite comic book story ever or even up there in like my top 1000, just saying.

The third story showcases a bit of everyone at the beginning, but then goes into a Fing Fang Foom/Punisher mash-up. This one is about a made-up cheesy holiday called Pantsgiving where everyone is supposed to basically wear short-shorts. I think it was meant to be funny, but it just came off weird. As I am writing this, I am realizing I really did not enjoy this comic book that much, can you tell? It was just less than funny. It was kinda like I was wanting to go to the dentist and get some teeth pulled. That would have been more fun than this comic so far. The artwork was a bit off-putting, but that was because of the beginning when they had different characters appear. Some of them just were not drawn very well, in my opinion, but the rest of the story I enjoyed the artwork. It was the traditional again, so that made it at least unproblematic as a reader. I just couldn’t though. Pantsgiving? BAH HUMBUG!

The last story (the Gwenpool story continues after this, but is just a continuation from the beginning), features the Red Skull being mad that instead of “Hail Hydra” the slogan is now “Hail Hatred” because of marketing gimmicks. This is obviously a bit of a nod towards the issues that Starbuck faced with its holiday cup. Red Skull gets mad. Hilarity ensues. This was the only one that I got a bit of a chuckle out of, unless Hitler showed up. I wasn’t here for that totally, but overall this was at least had some freaking humor that made some sense to me. The artwork again was the traditional style, so it again didn’t distract from the story. (I always have to at least make a comment on the artwork since these are comics for goodness sake. Otherwise I would probably have left that out of each of these, since they are all basically the same style, even though done by different artists.)

We find out that the source of all the weirdness, like Galactus being a friendly jolly giant, is thanks to Santa himself. That is all I am going to spoil there. He did something, he ain’t proud. They fix it and it makes Gwen sad, but happy all at the same time. Weird ending to the jolly Christmas crap of a special. This is one that can be avoided if you want. There are better Christmas specials out there. Go watch a Hallmark movie, it will be time better spent than here.

P.S. there was a Deadpool “Deadoween” or something like that comic in this as well. It was just as bad, sorry but I ain’t saying any more about this, Bye Felicia to this book!

Gwenpool has had her own Marvel series, which appears to potentially still be ongoing. It is available on the Marvel Unlimited app to read!
